One of the great political stories in generations is about to unfold, as Richard 'Kinky' Friedman, humorist, performer, mystery writer and Texas Monthly columnist, has announced his run for the governorship of the state of Texas in 2006. Friedman certainly will bring a whole new ballgame into Austin 's capitol building, and he will do so as an Independent candidate and political amateur. "The professionals gave us the Titanic, amateurs gave us the Ark. Career politicians are ribbon cutters. They see the governor's office as a job; I see it as an opportunity to make that Lone Star shine again.”
I'm an Independent, which is the party of George Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, Sam Houston, and Davy Crockett.”As Governor, Kinky, or “the Kinkster”, would:• Legalize casino gambling to fund education• Abolish political correctness “We didn't get to be the Lone Star state by being politically correct”• Take a good look at death row. “We need to make sure that we're not putting innocent people to death, which I believe we are”• Outlaw the de-clawing of cats• Bring young people into his administration. “Young people are less corrupt. They are the future of Texas ; it's theirs to win or lose.”
I'm a Jew, I'll hire good people.“If elected, I would ask Willie Nelson to be the head of the Texas Rangers and Energy Czar and Laura Bush to take charge of the Texas Peace Corps to improve education in the state. I'd ask my Palestinian hairdresser, Farouk Shami, to be Texas ' ambassador to Israel . We've worked together to create Farouk & Friedman olive oil. The oil comes from the Holy land and all of the profits go to benefit Israeli and Palestinian children.”One thing is for sure: this is not going to be politics as usual and Kinky's campaign, or anti-campaign, is not expecting to have a massive war chest from which to buy the Governor's office. Rather, “the coin of the spirit” will sweep Kinky into the Governor's office.

The Hawk

The Hawk within 1/24/05
Support of the “hawk” in men and women, not through military battle, instead with peaceful movements for the environment and social justice has always been pleasing to me. If this is living in fantasy- land then that is precisely where I have been for 37 yrs. This mental picture has brought great optimism and peace to me over the years. We are indeed creatures of habit; civilization is filled with mixed up theories (mostly unexamined- my new goal to examine) about the purpose and meaning of life, seems this results in confrontation which can and has provoked violence and war. In order for me to enjoy the many benefits of life on this great earth I must open my mind and reach out to understand. Global thinking is also something I am no stranger to. It’s good to know where other people came from why they believe the way they do. Tolerance of others ,in all ways, has been my motivation for many years.
The recent presidential election has definitely had an impact on my thought process- it has caused me to re-examine what I believed to be true about the United States of America.
When the White House asked the media not to air video of bin Laden it was a blow to free press in the name of protecting the people from what? fear? please. And the media complied- *sigh. Not that I think this is the first time it has ever happened- it’s not.
I do have a pretty good understanding of our foundation, and it IS my responsibility to find out more. Without much debate the U.S.A. Patriot Act bill was passed. I took seriously the privilege of going to my local library and studying anything I wanted without the government having the right to know- that is now gone. They can snoop all they want even into student records and medical records- doing all of this and never tell me what’s going on. With the wiretap powers, law enforcement being allowed to for ever detain non-citizens on “suspicion” of terrorism and more, I must say I’m pretty worried. I strongly believe my constitutional civil liberties are being violated. - I highly suggest a look at section 215 (PA) to all Americans just to see if you have a comfort level with what is law. Then a peek at the draft of PA2-The fourth amendment comes to mind front and center, violation or not you decide.
It deeply disturbed me to find that the Bu$h administration has power that I have been unable to find in the Constitution that being the single power to imprison an American citizen for ever without charges or even access to a lawyer. Did the courts somehow hand him a crown without the American people knowing or caring was my first thought. So shit! I could be taken into custody for no reason at all and called an enemy soldier, due process out the door. This ruling was under appeal- and I being the lazy American I have dropped the ball and have no idea what happened- complacency, my downfall.
The fingerprinting of protesters that were arrested during the R. National C. and making it okay by saying it took place because of fears of threats by terrorists or anarchists is a HUGE concern as well. Chris (mother) used to talk about “big brother” Tim (Father) still does- this isn’t something only hippies are talking about now- Of course with my limited knowledge I could be wrong. Holy shit, sure I hope I’m mistaken!
I guess the real question for me would be has the current leaders of the United States of America a real grasp on the foundation of this fine Country? From this angle --they most certainly do not.
And now, once again, we must fight for freedom- or ..*gulp* leave the country. This country where we have the pleasure -freedom of and freedom from.

America’s day of shame

Here's something good to read from the World's Socialist Web-Site

By David Walsh21 January 2005

Preview:
True to form, Bush delivered a series of disconnected assertions, lies and banalities. He made no coherent argument, but repeated certain key phrases over and over again, centering on the God-given mandate of the US to intervene anywhere in the world to advance the cause of “freedom.” In a 20-minute speech, the president uttered the words “free” or “freedom” 34 times, and the word “liberty” another 12 times.

Healthy DISSENT

Dear Diary,
Today I watched as George W Bu$h was sworn into the office of the President of the Untied States of America. Traditional with good speech writers it went off without incident. I found myself watch my 19 year old son watching CBS- thinking "does he believe this"? meaning the propaganda the media is feeding people. ~People love bu$h ~ one reporter said.
My son and I talked about it later- He's a smart Kid!

A Free Speech, TV Reporter got pepper sprayed. Arrests? haven't heard yet.
Pictures of protestors are coming in now. Here in Houston - hundreds protested with the theme-Inaugurate yourself! Healthy dissent. Protests were world wide today. As it should be.

I am wearing BLACK- and not spent any money. I'm going to read a good fiction story. Lose myself~
peace,
Jess

Dear Diary, 1/19/05
I woke-made myself a cup of joe, took the dogs for a walk and returned home to listen to the Rice testimonies and questions. ~
Democracy now! has been moved to this evening so that Pacifica can bring to the listener

SIGH~ I'm 38 years old. What do I know? Rather, what don't I know. How can the Senate approve Rice as the SOS for the U.S. ? I don't know. How did Bu$h get elected President of the USA? I don't know, I do have a good idea on this one.
Why is the media not reporting the real news? I don't know. Will I have Social Security money- will my 19 yr old son? I don't know. Why can't my family have a decent health care insurance plan without breaking my bank account? I don't know.

There are many things I don't know.
Consider the thought ~ the Bu$h administration admits they don't know everything~ Admission of wrong doings~

Who the hell am I kidding. Accountability is lost...
  • Depression sets in.
